Coming “very shortly” to a social media strategy near you…

A new advertising product known as Promoted Accounts will be released for Twitter “very shortly” said Twitter COO Dick Costolo today at the IAB Mixx Conference in Manhattan. This information was released by Mashable in a recent article.

Promoted Accounts will allow companies to be prominently featured through Twitter’s recently launched “Who to Follow” feature. The brands participating in this advertising format will be clearly designed as Twitter advertisers.

The theory behind the new ad format is that companies will be more exposed to Twitter users that are likely to be interested in the company.

Since Twitter is such an active social network, this new format may be very beneficial in getting engaging new customers. Costolo noted that currently its Promoted products suite, which includes Promoted Tweets and Promoted Trends, is receiving engagement rates around 5%.

What do you think of these new Twitter advertising platforms?
